If you have additional hard drive attached to your Windows 2008 server, you can always easily change the backup path to another drive, but how if you only got C: present in your Windows 2008 Server? This scenario mostly exist in virtualization environment, do we really need to attached another volume for the purpose of backup system state?

It is always recommended that store your backup at different locations and always keep the updated backup sets. But in this scenario, you can tweak your Windows 2008 server registry in order to allow system state backup on your system drive and the steps as below:

Open registry editor, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup\ (Note: If you cannot find the SystemStateBackup key, you may need to manually create it)

Inside the key, create a DWORD value name AllowSSBToAnyVolume and set the value to 1.

You can now backup system state in system drive.

Always, do not forget to backup your registry before you perform the above action, it may corrupt your system if you misused it. ;)

Windows 7 beta is available for download!

Great news for all beta tester! The answer is No. You will still be able to restore it on Windows Server 2008 by using a tool called Windows NTBackup - Restore Utility. Once you install this tool on your Windows Server 2008 box, you will be able to restore a NTBackup file on Windows Server 2008. For those who are interested, please get the tool from below link:

Windows NTBackup - Restore Utility

Note: You will need to enable Removable Storage Management feature in order to run Windows NTBackup - Restore Utility

Disable Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) for Windows 2008

Nowadays, new laptop is always equip with Hyper-V enabled hardware, such as virtualization enabled processor, 64-bit system. Some of you may want to install Windows 2008 on top of your laptop to try out Hyper-V. During this testing period, you may consider to perform your daily task on your laptop such as accessing your webmail, browse Internet for information etc. But when you try to open IE and accessing a website, IE will always prompt you for security warning and you always need to manually add in the URL for the website you browse into a trusted zone.

Previously in Windows 2003, you may remove this IE Enhanced Security Configuration from Add/Remove program, but when you try to look into Windows 2008 Program and Features, it was missing from there... Can we still be able to disable this setting?

Yes, you still can. For Windows 2008, IE Enhanced Security Configuration setting is resided in Server Manager. After you launch server manager, at the right pane Server Summary page, under the Security Information panel, click on the Configure IE ESC link. After that, a windows will prompt out as below:

Just edit the necessary setting and click on OK. Restart your IE browser, you will find all the security warning is missing, if you go to Internet Options -> Security tab, you will be able to tweak the security level for Internet zone. Last but not lease, please remain the original IE security settings for your production server. This is always the best recommendation from Microsoft.

Different type of virtual network in Hyper-V

Currently in Hyper-V Manager, you can create three different type of virtual network, which is External, Internal, and Private. It is very hard for you to do testing or manage the Windows virtual machine if you cannot move your mouse pointer smoothly. Recently I just realized how to solve it from a friend of mine. Before this I would like to share this post with my friend, Wayne Lee King Lek. However, they have different opinion and understanding. To share with you guys:

1) Yes, you will need Windows 2008 CAL to run Windows 2008 Hyper-V - however you need to understand this CAL is not just for Hyper-V - you can then run Windows 2008 other features, eg: Domain controller with RODC, serverCore +++

2) Lots of people did mention that Hyper-V do not support Windows 2000 as its virtual machine. It does, you will need SP4 and only support 1 proc. Check the guest operating system supports for Hyper-V:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954958/en-us

3) Other Microsoft product supported in other virtualization technology? Thats cool - all the research for sure be able to finish within 180 days - unless you want to use it for production :).

To do it?

Click Start, run -> CMD.

Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and ENTER to check the current evaluation period.

Type slmgr.vbs –rearm to reset the evaluation period and then press ENTER.

Restart the computer.

Thats it. How are we going to setup a DC?

In this post, we will like to share:

First of all, we will need to configure the IP Address and put in DNS configuration:

netsh int ip show config will show you the existing configuration.

To configure static IP address on an interface:
netsh int ip set address <interface>static <ip><netmask><gateway><metric>

eg: netsh int ip set address "Local Area Connection" static 10.10.100.10 255.255.255.0 10.10.100.254 1

To configure DNS server: (let say pointing DNS to HQ DNS server)
set dnsserver "Local Area Connection" static 10.10.10.10 primary

After configure TCP/IP configuration, its the time to install AD.

Since this is Server Core, DCPROMO GUI will not prompt for you. You will need to prepare the answer file.

NOTE: Please ensure you make ness testing before the deployment. In this scenario, we are setting up additional DC (With same forest, domain with existing AD setup. This is a replica).

EG of the answer file

<begin>
<begin>; dcpromo.exe /unattend:C:\AdditionalDC.txt
; You may need to fill in password fields prior to using the unattend file.
; If you leave the values for "Password"
; as "*", then you will be asked for credentials
[DCInstall]
ReplicaDomainDNSName=MyDomain.local
SiteName=Default-First-Site-Name
InstallDNS=No
ConfirmGc=Yes
CreateDNSDelegation=No
UserDomain=MyDomain.local
UserName=MyDomain\administrator
Password=*
DatabasePath="C:\Windows\NTDS"
LogPath="C:\Windows\NTDS"
SYSVOLPath="C:\Windows\SYSVOL"
SafeModeAdminPassword=MyP@ss123
; Run-time flags (optional)
; CriticalReplicationOnly=Yes
; RebootOnCompletion=Yes
<end><end>

Copy After the <begin>and before the <end>. Save it into a file, eg: MyUnattend.txt in to the ServerCore C:\

Then you will need to run the following command to setup the additional DC replica in Server Core:

c:\dcpromo /unattend:MyUnattend.txt

You will then see the results. Recently, participating a Early Adoptor of Windows 2008, code name Longhorn. One of the customer is eager to look into Virtualization, cool!

However, something that we found that would like to share it our here. As for now, only Windows 2008 RC0 that support virtualization, not other versions.

You also would be good to know:

- Not all the hardware is supported by W2008 V. There are lists of the hardware manufacturer in Microsoft website, so, do check it out before rolling out.
- W2008 Ent 32/64 bit support V.
- Only support 8 logical processor
- Max 64GB Ram
- Do not support more than 1 virtual SCSI controller (Means do not support cluster within V)
- Windows6.0-KB939854-x64.msu and Windows6.0-KB939853-x64.msu must be install to allow V to be in Server Management
- You cant install AD in the host OS
- You cant run VPC, VS in the physical machine together with Hypervisor
- Hypervisor do not support dynamic disk...beware or you will need to reinstall your OS

Lastly, when we try this out, our machine has multiple IPs, which results we can't log in using VMC. You can only have one primary IP, everything will then work fine.

Lots of things huh? Below are the breakdown. We will share more, this is only intro :)

ADCS (Active Directory Certificate Services)
This server role enables creation and management of digitalcertificates for users, computers, and organizationsas part of a public key infrastructure.

ADDS (Active Directory Domain Services)
It's functionality has been carried forward into Windows Server 2008, along with an improved setup wizard. This also provide new management options for ADDS features such as read-only domain controllers (RODCs) - the hot topic in Windows 2008 AD.

ADFS (Active Directory Federation Services)
A feature that provides an identity access solution giving browser-based clients (inside or outside your network) single sign-on access to protected, Internet-facing applications.

ADLDS (Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services)
A LDAP directory service provide the functionality that was provided byActive Directory Application Mode (ADAM), and provides data storage and retrieval for directory enabled applications, without the dependencies thatare required for ADDS. It also do not store security principle, which store by ADDS.

ADRMS (Active Directory Rights Management Services)
Works with Rights Management Services applications to help safeguard digital information from unauthorized use. Organization can define exactly how a recipientcan use the information, such as who can open, modify, print, forward, or take other actions with the information. It can be applied directly to information such as financial reports, customer data, and e-mail messages!

RODC (Read Only Domain Controller)
A new type of domain controller in the Windows Server 2008 operating system. With an RODC, organizations can easily deploya domain controller in locations where physical security cannot be guaranteed. This solved lots of issues where we consult/discuss with our customer, which do not have security in branches offices. An RODC hosts a read-only replica of the database in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) for a given domain. The RODC is also capable of running the Global Catalog Role! Cool huh? We will focus only to RODC in next few postings.

Happy Reading.

Virtualization in Windows 2008 - Part 1

Lots of principle now pushing Virtualization. Now, we would like to share why we mention please be patient and wait for Windows 2008 virtualization.

First of all, do you know that Virtualization has been around in computing since '60s? if you are old enough like me, you will know mainframe and each of the users will have one virtual machine.

This Changed in '80s, thanks to Personal Computer. Same thing to server side, scaling out is the trend rather than scale up. mainframe will have only one machine, isnt it? thats why some of the time, most of our "old like me" customer will always ask "Why we need to buy so many boxes??, one is enough."

Scalling out become an issue for enterprise customer- so many servers to take care of, backup and restore is an issue, hiring right people to take care even worst.

The first thing most of the tech guys will look for Server Consolidation. Lets imagine, having a DHCP server, which only will be used every morning, when users boot up thier machine and afterthat, only utilise less than 10% of the resources. Some of you might say, can we put in File server, DNS, and even some AD!At the end, can we monitor, plan and knowing the server refresh cyle and bottleneck? Or what if you want to down the server for maintenance?

In next part, we will want to share the different between other party virtualization and the difference between Windows 2008 virtualization.

Happy reading.

Before you install/upgrade to Windows Server 2008

After knowing the installation is so easy and simple; you will need to know what you need to know about before installing Windows Server 2008. Important.

Check for application compatibility. You can use the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit. To sign up for the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit beta program, see the Microsoft TechNet Web site about Windows Application Compatibility http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=29880

Backup, backup and backup. Before perform anything, remember to perform backup - ensure you will be able to rollback the previous state of your OS. Another way to back up configuration information is to create a backup set for Automated System Recovery.

Disconnect UPS devices. Best practices, disconnect the serial cable before running Setup. Setup automatically attempts to detect devices that are connected to serial ports, and UPS equipment can cause issues with the detection process.

Disable Antivirus software. Antivirus can interfere with installation. It will make installation much slower by scanning every file that is copied to your computer.

This is new - Windows Firewall is on by default. Server applications that must receive unsolicited inbound connections will fail until you create inbound firewall rules to allow them. Check with your application vendor to determine which ports and protocols are necessary for the application to run correctly.
